In response to Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan's appeal for greater transparency, simplicity, and fairness in the recovery of funds from expired gift cards, Amazon reaffirmed on Tuesday that it offers numerous opportunities for customers to reclaim their unused balances while fully complying with RBI regulations. Kalyan had pointed out on Monday that while adding funds to an Amazon gift card is a straightforward process, recovering money from an expired card is cumbersome and inefficient.

He explained that customers are often required to contact customer service, explain their issue, and navigate through a prolonged and complicated process—whereas, ideally, any unused balance should be automatically refunded to the linked bank account.

"Gift card purchasers are notified twice before their card's expiration. Even after expiration, customers can easily contact our customer care team for reactivation if necessary," Amazon clarified in a statement.

In addition to adhering to RBI’s regulations, Amazon noted that its co-branded gift cards are redeemable not only on its platform but also across more than 10,000 apps for a wide range of everyday use cases.
